Research Areas

Focusing on the following areas related to arid and extremely arid environments:

  • Contemporary hydrological and climate change and variability (analysis; perception; impacts; relevant adaptation options).
  • Drought, aridity and desertification (hydrological and climatic indicators; risk to agricultural yield; early warning; management).
  • Interactions between land-use and land-cover changes (e.g. deforestation/reforestation, dam construction, irrigation, urbanization) and hydrological and climatic regimes.
  • Inter-comparison of energy and water balance models output data (e.g. solar radiation, evaporation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, etc).
  • Farmers’ perception of climatic conditions and agricultural productivity and their adaptation measures.
  • Analysis of indicators of growing/greening season and irrigation performance and efficiency.
  • Realization of beneficial and harmful implications of water conservation programmes (e.g. water harvesting).
